Touchdown in Bangkok

We’ve arrived in Bangkok from San Francisco. The trip was about 19 hours door to door. The flight from SFO to BKK was smooth and completely devoid of turbulence. The seatbelt lights came on exactly two times :)

Little man was an angel during the entire trip so our anxieties about flying with a toddler have been way overblown. He hung out like everyone else and was as patient as one could expect from a 4 year old. He really enjoyed looking out the window and was excited to see the clouds, lights and ocean below.

The weather here is hot and humid. It is about 91F but staying at our friend’s home feels more like a five-star hotel. They have a sweet little slice of paradise right in the center of town opposite the Hotel Narai so we’re just a few feet from all the action.

Thailand is a well connected country. From the moment I set foot in Bangkok I was able to pick up a Thai SIM card (I mean literally – there’s a booth right outside the Cusoms exit in the airport. Within minutes I was up and running with a local number for 200 baht (about $6).

Jet lag took over last night and we so tired we slept through dinner and into Sunday morning. We had a nice run through the town on our way for lunch today. I’ll post more decent photos as soon as I am able to download and process some of my RAW files. I’ve got an appointment to visit a camera repair shop for some lens calibrations on my new 20mm which shows some front-focus issues. Never buy new gear before going on a trip.

More later, I’m off to dinner :)

Adventure to Thailand: packing light

Daisies on Flickr – Photo Sharing!

I’ll try to post more when I arrive in Bangkok.

Gadgetwise, I’ve decided to pack light this time — a digital SLR, a point&shoot and my cell phone. I hate the feeling of losing stuff and the best way to not lose it is to not bring it…

These ribs don’t need the magic sauce

Some serious eating was afoot at the Main Street Grill. Yours truly turned 35 this day.

Thanks for all the warm wishes, friends. It’s nice to know people who cared enough to write or phone me to share some of the love. It really made my day.

Sunny day in Carmel

The weather was nice so we took a drive down to Carmel to play at the beach. Next time you are there, drop in to Cafe Napoli.
