Happy Fourth of July

Just got back from a trip to Cambria. I’m writing this blog from my iPhone. Hopefully I’ll update more frequently.

Tiger

A group of sleeping tigers, as photographed from our bus at Safari World. The entire zoo is open and without fencing and tourists are driven through the property, safari style, to view the animals in their natural habitat. The predatory cats were kept in a special area which required the bus to pass through two sets of steel fences, reminding me of the opening scene in Jurassic Park in which the first visitors were allowed into the park.

====

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water’d heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Don’t forget where you came from, but never let that hold you back either.

The beautiful lotus blossom springs from the mud and rotting detritus below. Its bud shoots high above the surface and opens its fragrant petals into the sun. For a few brief days it stays this way until it dries and turns back into ash. The lotus motif is a symbol often associated with Buddhism.

The entire plant is completely edible. Lotus seeds are boiled and coated with sugar which is used as a treat on Tet (Vietnamese New Year). The tubers in its roots are boiled in pork and chicken stock and sliced. It has a subtle flavor and a slight crunch. Its stalks are used in many dishes and soups. The leaves are very fragrant and can be used either fresh or dried for wrapping over sticky rice.

I took this image at the Wat Phra Kaew in Thailand. It is in its last days of bloom and the petals will eventually fall, only leaving behind the seed pod and stalk.

Year of the Boar, all 1060 pounds of it

Boy Bags Wild Hog Bigger Than ‘Hogzilla’

The boy in the photo is only 11 years old. This is quite a feat for someone his age. I don’t think I could hold a .50 caliber steady enough to shoot paper target. This boy bags a mad, raving demon pig that came right out of Princess Mononoke. Congrats Jamison, that’s quite a lot of sausage you got there :)
